SENIOR LIVING Projects

GARDEN COTTAGE

2006-2010

The Garden Cottage is a 10-bedroom, single-family residence assisted living facility. The building is the first licensed single-family assisted living home in North Carolina and is the first of six planned Garden Cottages on the grounds.

The most unique aspect of the Garden Cottage is inherent in its intent: to eliminate the large hospital-like nursing care facility setting and replace it with a person-centered setting that provides an at-home living experience. Each resident has his or her own private room with space for a queen-sized bed and ample furniture, as well as a bathroom with a shower. The Garden Cottage also offers residents easy access to all areas of the house, including the living room, kitchen, dining room, and outdoor patio.

In addition to the psychological advantages of de-institutionalizing the aging experience, the Garden Cottage design includes initiatives that provide for an overall healthier environment for residents, including LEED Certification. It was one of the first Assisted Living small houses in the United States to be so recognized.
