Reinventing a cherished resource

Forsyth County Central Library

Steele Group Architects teamed with RATIO Architects to reinvent the Forsyth County Central Library in downtown Winston-Salem, NC. Originally built in 1953, the library was added onto in 1980. However, it never operated as one entity, forcing the staff to work around the combined building’s flaws.

The new design, leveraging the 1980 addition, created a 100,000 sq. ft. central library that is more flexible and adaptable to current and future needs of the community. It houses an auditorium, community meeting rooms, a computer training area, a café, a technology petting zoo and an art gallery, along with a vast collection of books and periodicals.
