HABITAT FOR HUMANITY JIMMY JOHNSON VOLUNTEER CENTER

Winston-Salem, NC
2015

For 25 years Habitat for Humanity International has been offering “alternative breaks” for college students through their Collegiate Challenge program. Students from colleges around the country come to Winston-Salem to volunteer for a week at Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County. As part of their new campus, Habitat decided to build the memorial Jimmy Johnson Volunteer Center with the Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem to house these students.

The Volunteer Center is based upon the design of two habitat houses with a common connector in-between. It houses up to 40 volunteers in dormitory-style sleeping quarters upstairs with a common kitchen, dining room, living room, laundry room and wrap around porch downstairs. In addition to housing, it also serves as a teaching tool for future Habitat homeowners. When they need to learn how to perform routine maintenance tasks on their new home, such as cleaning gutters or scrubbing siding, the Volunteer Center is the place where they learn.
